One of the first cues you’ll teach your puppy is sit, which forms the basis for more advanced exercises.

You will take the AKC’s CGC Responsible Owner’s Pledge, in which you vow to be responsible for your puppy’s health, safety, good manners, and quality of life for his entire life. Health-care commitments include taking your dog to the veterinarian for regular visits, not just when he is sick; administering parasite preventives; and keeping up with grooming and good nutrition. Ensuring your dog’s safety includes providing adequate fencing, not letting your dog run freely, always supervising your dog around children, and making sure that he is properly identified. Good manners mean that you set a high standard of dog ownership by never infringing on the rights of other people and dogs in public places. When traveling, make certain that your puppy doesn’t bark if crated in a hotel room or relieve himself in inappropriate areas. At the dog park, if your dog is trying to play with another dog, and the other dog clearly is not interested, stop your dog from bothering the other dog. If your dog has the bad habit of jumping up when greeting people, you must stop him from doing so. If your dog goes to the bathroom in a public place, clean it up; walking away and pretending that you don’t see it only increases anti-dog sentiment, which is why dogs aren’t allowed many places. Finally, quality of life means attention to your dog’s training and overall care.
